The Voluntary Sector Internship Scheme

Building on the successful partnership established when developing a Foundation Degree in Voluntary Sector Management, the University of Winchester and Community Action Hampshire are pleased to launch this post-graduate student placement project.
The new Voluntary Sector Internship Scheme at the University of Winchester is the first of its kind in the country. Operating alongside Community Action Hampshire, the scheme will provide three days a week management work experience plus an additional bursary of £1,000 towards a one year postgraduate programme in business. The scheme starts this September and runs for one year.
Structure
This Internship is a one year programme that seeks to enhance opportunities for graduates seeking a career in business management in the third sector. A key thrust of the programme will be encouraging interns to become effective social entrepreneurs and it is anticipated that this will be achieved through participation in the following:

• Register for a Masters Programme with the University of Winchester
All participants will commence postgraduate study in Business Management with the University from late September. Interns are given the opportunity to study for a Vocational Masters degree in business management choosing from the following: MBA, MSc Business Management and MA in Managing Contemporary Global Issues.

• Undertake an extended Work Placement in the Voluntary Sector
Through a minimum six-month part-time placement graduates will utilise their skills in a ‘real-work’ setting providing valuable experience of the challenges facing the third sector. This placement will also provide a solid foundation on which to build a successful career.

Placements may be chosen from a range of settings across Hampshire including the Basingstoke and Andover areas. There will be a wide range of settings to choose from including: Charities for Children and Young Persons, those within the context of Health Care and working with older people to name but a few. In joining one of these teams, you will help to improve the quality, accessibility and efficiency of the sector.

Examples of projects in the pipeline include:

- Setting up a new third sector event organisation providing trading opportunities for third sector organisations and raising awareness of trading with the third sector within the public and private sectors;

- Development and implementation of a marketing strategy for a third sector training provider; and

- Analysis of trading opportunities for an established third sector organisation; development and implementation of a trading strategy.

Placements will be flexible, ie day-time, evening, weekend. Student experience, interest and ambition will be matched as closely as possible to the needs of organisations offering placements.

• Receive Initial Training in the Voluntary Sector
An induction into the Voluntary Sector will ensure that each intern gains the business skills and third sector knowledge to equip them to become managers within the sector.

Is there any possibility of a full-time job beyond the programme?
A successful placement can only increase job prospects.

This placement has the potential to provide Interns with real management experience in the third sector. Experience and proven track record supported by references from within the third sector will strengthen a job application.
